APAV received the visit of the State Secretary for the Citizenship and Equality and the President of CIG

On the 12th of April APAV received the visit of the State Secretary for the Citizenship and Equality, Catarina Marcelino, and the President of the Commission for Gender Equality (CIG), Teresa Fragoso. The visit took place in the facilities of the Victim Support Line and in the Shelter Home Alcipe (Casa de Abrigo Alcipe).

During the visit, the President of APAV, João Lázaro, presented the procedures for victim support and the housing service for women victim of domestic violence and their children.

APAV inaugurated the Victim Support Office of Paços de Ferreira

APAV inaugurated the Victim Support Office of Paços de Ferreira on May 23rd, at a ceremony attended by the president of the APAV, João Lázaro, and the president of the Municipality of Paços de Ferreira, Humberto Brito. The new Victim Support Office has the support of the Municipality of Paços de Ferreira and is located in the City Hall building, in Paços do Concelho - Praça da República, 46 (Room 0.08 B)

APAV is now directly present in 24 counties through its national network of 17 Victim Support Offices, supported by the Victim Support Line - 116 006 (a free European victim support number) and three specialized support sub-networks (CARE - support for children and young people victims of sexual violence; RAFAVH - support for family members and friends of victims of homicide; and UAVMD - migrant and discrimination victims).

APAV inaugurated the new Victim Support Office of Alto Alentejo Oeste

On the 10th of May, APAV inaugurated the new Victim Support Office of Alto Alentejo Oeste. The new Victim Support Office has the support of the Municipality of Ponte de Sor and its mission is to provide support to the municipalities of Alter do Chão, Avis, Crato, Gavião, Fronteira, Nisa, Ponte de Sor and Sousel, providing support to victims that are living in a territory characterized by populations dispersion. The prevention of criminality and violence in the western area of Alto Alentejo is also a gamble for this new and innovative service, based on the mobility and flexibility toward the territory and the population.

This innovative service comes from the operationalization of the Collaboration Protocol, signed on the 14th of March 2017 with the State Secretary for Citizenship and Equality, Catarina Marcelino, eight municipalities members of the Intermunicipal Community of Alto Alentejo, the Commission for Citizenship and Equality of Gender (CIG), the decentralized services of the direct administration of the State in the areas of Social Security, Education, Health and Professional Training, the services of the Ministry of Justice in the areas of Legal Medicine, Reinsertion and Penitentiary Services, the Commissions of Children and Youngster Protection, GNR, PSP, Fire Fighters and Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre.

The President of the Portuguese Republic visited APAV

The President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, visited APAV on the March 8th, for the occasion of the International Women's Day. In his speech, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reinforced the importance of the work carried out by APAV in supporting victims of crime, and also expressed the desire to see APAV growing continuously in those support, prevention and awareness services offered to those who suffer violence and crime.

The President’s visit started with a tour at APAV’s head office, Victim Support Helpline – 116006 and Lisbon Victim Support Office, and ended up with a warm and motivating speech. In his speech President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa highlighted the importance of APAV’s work for more than 26 years on the support of victims of every crime in Portugal, with emphasis on the service that APAV provides to the Portuguese society as a whole.

The President took the opportunity to mention the award received by APAV with the degree of Honorary Member of the Order of Liberty and, two-years past, express on behalf of the Portuguese the gratitude for all of APAV’s work on giving voice to the silence of victims in Portugal. More than a recognition of APAV’s past work, the President emphasised that the award should be seen as an incentive for the future

Because it was the International Women’s Day, the President of the Republic also made an important note on the severe statistics of domestic violence and the continuous effort and work that still has to be done for this victims in Portugal and worldwide, being APAV the civil society organisation of reference in tackling and supporting the victims of this phenomenon.
